Point of Sale (POS) System for Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the UAE

A point of sale (POS) system used to be a cash register with a barcode scanner. In Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the UAE it is now a regulated, connected endpoint: every receipt is a tax document, every sale moves stock that may sit in another branch or warehouse, and every card or wallet payment must be reconciled against the bank's settlement. Retailers, restaurants, cafés, gyms and hotel outlets all need a POS built for this, configured to the compliance rules of the country they trade in. For the basics, see our POS glossary entry.

Superior Business Solutions (SBS) uses Odoo Point of Sale as its core POS platform, running on the same database as Odoo inventory, accounting and CRM, and can connect store sales to Microsoft Dynamics 365 or Zoho back offices where those already run your finance.

What a modern POS must handle

  • Fast checkout: barcode and weighed items, variants, price lists, promotions, split payments across cash, card and wallet, and returns that issue proper credit notes.
  • Offline resilience: an open Odoo POS session keeps taking orders when the internet drops and syncs them afterwards; busy branches still need a backup line, because opening sessions and some payment terminals depend on the network.
  • Hardware: thermal receipt and kitchen printers, cash drawers, scanners, customer displays, scales and payment terminals, connected over the network or through Odoo's IoT Box.
  • Live inventory and accounting: every sale updates stock by branch and warehouse, and closing a session posts sales, taxes and payment methods to the ledger.
  • Loyalty and gift cards: points, coupons, gift cards and e-wallets on customer profiles shared with the CRM and online store.
  • Multi-branch control: central price lists and menus, user rights, cash control at session opening and closing, and an audit trail of discounts, voids and refunds.

POS in Saudi Arabia: ZATCA, VAT and mada

Every consumer sale in the Kingdom is a simplified tax invoice with a QR code, at 15% VAT. In the integration phase of ZATCA's FATOORA e-invoicing, rolled out to taxpayers in waves, the POS must cryptographically stamp each simplified invoice and report it to ZATCA within 24 hours, while invoices for business customers must be cleared before they are shared. Each e-invoice generation unit (typically a till or invoicing journal) is onboarded through the FATOORA portal with its own cryptographic stamp identifier (CSID), invoice counter and hash chain, so tills should not share one identity. Since reporting follows the sale, a well-configured POS can keep selling through an outage and report within the window. Returns become credit notes, and invoices must be in Arabic (bilingual layouts are allowed). Current Odoo versions cover ZATCA Phase 2 in the Saudi localisation, Point of Sale included, and SBS, an Odoo Gold Partner in Saudi Arabia, handles onboarding, testing and go-live; see ZATCA e-invoicing.

In-store payments are dominated by mada debit cards and contactless wallets such as Apple Pay. Where the acquirer offers an integration, the POS pushes the amount to the terminal so cashiers never key it twice; otherwise the terminal runs standalone and SBS sets up reconciliation against the bank settlement report. Restaurants typically add delivery-app orders feeding the kitchen queue (see restaurant software in Saudi Arabia), while hotels post outlet charges to guest folios, as covered in hotel management software.

POS in Egypt: ETA e-receipts and VAT

The Egyptian Tax Authority is extending its e-receipt system to B2C sellers in successive stages by ETA decision. Once your company is included, each POS device is registered with the ETA and every receipt is submitted electronically with a unique identifier and a verification QR code, while sales to companies continue through the ETA e-invoice system. Many retailers and wholesalers therefore need both flows from one system, with VAT at the standard 14% rate. Odoo's Egyptian localisation covers ETA e-invoicing as standard, and SBS adds and tests the e-receipt integration as part of the project; see Egypt e-invoice integration.

The heaviest workload is usually the catalogue: items must carry GS1 or EGS codes for ETA submissions, so product data is cleaned early. Cash remains a large share of transactions alongside cards (including the national Meeza scheme), mobile wallets and instant transfers, which makes end-of-day cash control and tender reconciliation important. Prices can also change frequently, which favours central price management over editing each till; our retail ERP in Egypt page covers the back office.

POS in the UAE: VAT, e-invoicing and mall reporting

In the UAE, VAT is 5% and receipts must meet Federal Tax Authority invoicing rules: simplified tax invoices for most consumer sales, and full tax invoices for VAT-registered business buyers where the rules require them. The Peppol-based e-invoicing system phasing in from 2026 covers B2B and B2G transactions, with B2C retail sales outside its initial scope, so POS receipts are unaffected for now, but business sales from the same system (corporate accounts, catering, wholesale) will need to flow through an Accredited Service Provider once your phase applies. Retailers registered in the Tax Refunds for Tourists scheme can issue tax-free tags from the operator's tools or an integrated POS.

Contactless cards and mobile wallets are the norm, buy-now-pay-later is common at checkout, and mall leases with turnover-based rent often require tenants to report POS sales. Fitness and leisure operators combine POS with memberships and access control; see gym management software in the UAE.

Alternatives to an ERP-native POS

Buyers usually also compare standalone cloud POS apps (quick to start, but stock and accounting live elsewhere), restaurant-specialist POS products (deep food-and-beverage features, separate back office) and enterprise retail suites such as Microsoft Dynamics 365 Commerce for large multi-country chains. The deciding question is how much back office you want in the same system as the till.

How SBS rolls out a POS

  1. Store walk-through: hardware and network audit across tills, printers, scanners and terminals.
  2. Set-up: catalogue, price lists, taxes and receipt layouts in Arabic and English.
  3. Compliance onboarding: ZATCA device onboarding in Saudi Arabia, ETA POS registration in Egypt, FTA-compliant receipts in the UAE.
  4. Integrations: payment terminals, delivery apps and loyalty.
  5. Pilot and rollout: one pilot branch, then phased rollout with cashier and supervisor training.
  6. Support: hypercare through the first trading days, then ongoing helpdesk and maintenance from a dedicated support team.

What drives POS pricing

  • Number of branches, tills and users.
  • Hardware: reusing compatible devices versus buying printers, scanners, scales and kitchen screens.
  • Compliance work: ZATCA onboarding per device, ETA e-receipt and e-invoice connectivity.
  • Payment-terminal and delivery-app integrations.
  • Catalogue size and data cleansing, including ETA item coding in Egypt.
  • Loyalty, gift cards and custom reports.
  • Support hours that match your trading pattern.

Checklist before you choose

  • Is ZATCA Phase 2 or ETA e-receipt compliance native or delivered through a tested integration?
  • What exactly keeps working offline, and how are offline sales reported?
  • Does stock update centrally across branches and the online store?
  • Can head office change prices and menus for every branch at once?
  • Who supports your stores after go-live?

Frequently asked questions

How much does a POS system cost in Saudi Arabia, Egypt or the UAE?

The price depends on the number of branches and tills, how much hardware you can reuse, compliance integration with ZATCA or the ETA, payment-terminal and delivery-app integrations, catalogue preparation and the support level. SBS quotes after a store and hardware review.

What is the best POS system for restaurants?

A good restaurant POS handles tables, modifiers, kitchen printing or a kitchen display, split bills, delivery-app orders and recipe-based stock deduction while meeting ZATCA or ETA rules. Odoo POS with its restaurant features covers these inside one ERP, so stock and accounting update automatically.

Is Odoo POS compliant with ZATCA Phase 2?

Current Odoo versions include ZATCA Phase 2 integration in the Saudi localisation, Point of Sale included. Compliance in practice depends on onboarding each e-invoice generation unit, correct tax configuration and testing, which SBS handles during implementation.

Does the POS keep working without internet?

An open Odoo POS session keeps taking orders offline and syncs them when the connection returns. In Saudi Arabia, simplified invoices issued during an outage must still be reported to ZATCA within 24 hours, so SBS recommends a backup connection for busy branches.

Do I need ETA e-receipts for my POS in Egypt?

Yes, once your company falls within a stage of the ETA e-receipt rollout, consumer sales must be issued as e-receipts from POS devices registered with the ETA. Sales to companies continue to use ETA e-invoices.

Can I use my existing POS hardware?

Often yes: many receipt printers, cash drawers, scanners and scales work with Odoo POS directly or through the IoT Box. Payment terminals depend on whether your bank or payment provider offers an integration, which SBS checks during the hardware audit.
