Diabetics are increasing dramatically every year and they are carrying a lot of anxiety and fear for the threats they probably face like the weakness in several biometric functions and other side diseases.
One of the dangerous diseases a diabetic is threatened by is “Diabetic Retinopathy” which is the fastest-growing cause of preventable blindness! Thanks to Artificial Intelligence AI technology, ophthalmologists become more powerful to face this cruel disease.
The dilemma of Diabetic Retinopathy!
Diabetic retinopathy is the disease that threatens more than 415 million diabetics globally to lose their ability to see our beautiful world and blind forever!
Diabetic retinopathy is diagnosed as damage to the retina caused by complications of diabetes mellitus. If detected early, it can be treated; if not, it can lead to irreversible blindness.
The difficulty of diagnosing the disease by the human eye doctor and the lack of well-trained ophthalmologists globally are considered as the challenge in dealing with this disease that ophthalmologist always says they know how to handle but they don’t pick it up early enough!
Here, artificial intelligence intervenes to support ophthalmologists in an effective way to quickly detect the disease through an advanced device that can be used by trained specialists and thus also solve the problem in the lack of competencies of ophthalmologists.

Google AI solves the dilemma of Diabetic Retinopathy
Over the past three years, Google has worked with its partner Verily to develop a machine learning algorithm so that it detects the disease early along with many other eye diseases. at the Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai, India.
The idea of this automated algorithm is Google has millions of images. Those images were used as ground truth for an article and that’s Google’s deep learning algorithm that detects and raids diabetic retinopathy with accuracy. That’s better than what a human eye doctor can do. And it also gives an instantaneous read, instantaneous measure of the level of diabetic retinopathy instead of having to wait hours or days. ARDA “Automated retinal disease assessment” is currently just used in clinical trials. So but it’s going to be a game-changer when it’s out there
Google is not the first to offer a solution using artificial intelligence technology for the disease, as the IDX-DR is the first device that uses artificial intelligence to be approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to make the decision of the examination without the need for a doctor.
And this is not the only AI solution that empowers healthcare in saving people’s lives and increasing their prospects to live a better life and deal with the difficulties caused by chronic and severe diseases. Technology and Artificial intelligence, in particular, have a magical power to support humans in their journey on this beautiful planet!
